Hard to load cameras and tips

Mon, 09/06/2010 - 07:46
I've always had trouble loading Nikon cameras. It often took 30-50 tries. I would only get it loaded by luck. I've never had this much trouble with any other camera. Here is a video that helped me figure out how to do it. By using the fold over trick shown in the video, I got it to work on the first try.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LqmTmtbpClQ

What cameras do you find hard to load? What tips can you provide to help others to not have the same trouble you had? Don't just limit this to 35mm still cameras. If you have a tip about another format or a cine camera, go ahead and post it. I only posted this in the 35mm forum because I started it with a 35mm camera. Mods, please move it if there is a better place for it.

Bellows tape in Australia

Mon, 09/06/2010 - 05:45
I have a 11x14 Century Studio camera with a bellows that needs patching along several folds. I contacted 3M products today because I know that they produce a polyester tape #850 black that is terrific. It's thin, light-tight and doesn't gather when compressing the bellows.

Unfortunately they don't bring it into Australia except for special order and apparently it HAS to come by sea!!!! Crazy, I know, and I need to tape this bellows for a CD cover shoot in two weeks!

Can anyone suggest a flexible, effective tape to use? I don't want just a quick, one use repair...I want it to last a while until I decide to replace it (I think I still have a few years left in it). The 3M is a wonderful tape...but alas I need to live off this island to get it.

Any help is very much appreciated.

EOS 3 00 aperture issue

Mon, 09/06/2010 - 03:23
Hello,

I'm having a bit of a problem every now and then with my EOS 3. When shooting the aperture will show 00 and I will have to remove the lens and remount it to continue. The rest of the controls all work fine, it is just the aperture that shows 00 and the shutter won't release until I remount the lens.

Now I thought this might be a lens related issue (Tamron 28-75) but there is no such problem with a Rebel 2000 body I also have. I have another cheap Canon zoom that I could use but I don't want to burn film for that as the issue is not very frequent. It happened maybe 5-6 times over 10 rolls.

I also get the impression it is only happening when film is loaded as I fired off a hundred or so frames with no film and there were no issues.

Has anyone had any such issues? I thought it might be a battery problem but I replaced the battery with a new one and made sure all contacts in the chamber and lens mount are clean, yet it doesn't seem to solve the problem.

Anyone else with such problems? Not a big issue, I can get another body for £70-100, but it is annoying.

Lucky enlarger restoration.

Mon, 09/06/2010 - 00:41
Hello everyone,
I was walking around a swapmeet when I noticed a lucky enlarger. For $10 I couldn't refuse. I checked everything out and it's all in working order. The only problem is a little bit of rust peppered here and there and a lot of dust. So my question is what's the best way to clean the lenses and what can I do about the rust.

Looking for advice developing 16mm movie film in the Morse G3.

Sun, 09/05/2010 - 23:33
I should receive a Morse G3 developing tank in a couple of days for the purpose developing 100' reels of Plus-X negative movie film. I thought I'd squeeze everyone here for their experience and wisdom before I embark on this adventure. And advice that can save me from wasting gobs of film would surely be appreciated. I am assuming that everyone develops their movies at home these days. ;-)

Many Thanks in advance.

Best Combination of Film and Developer for Sharpness?

Sun, 09/05/2010 - 23:19
In the new year I will be embarking on a mission to shoot one film and develope the film in one developer. I will be shooting with a Sinar F that my school owns. The only question left is what film/developer combonation to use. I do mainly landscape work and I have no problems with long exposures or long developing times. I've been looking at a few different films: ADOX 25, Efke 25, FP4+, T-max 100, Foma 100 (baisically anything from freestyle that is 4x5). I have no idea what combination of film and developer would give me maximum sharpness while still allowing me to experiment with expantion and contraction processing. All ideas and pieces of advice are appreciated.

Photo Flea Market Box Hill Victoria Sept 19th - 9am - 1PM

Sun, 09/05/2010 - 23:16
Hi all

just a reminder the next photo market is on Sunday week the 19th September at the Box Hill Town Hall, Whitehorse Rd, Box Hill - starting at 9am.

Admission is still only $2.

I'm on the organising committee, and we have listened to the feedback from the last market, and are trying a new table layout. Hopefully the new layout will spread people out a bit more so there will be more room around the tables.

I'm also sharing a table with a friend of mine -I'll be near the front door, so drop by and say hi. Just look for the table with the Pentax 67 outfit on it (roughish, but working well and cheap), a Graphic View 5X4 and a few interesting darkroom bits..

See you then

Andrew

LPL 670DXL enlarger question

Sun, 09/05/2010 - 21:55
I just obtained a lovely, mint-condition LPL 670DXL via the local Craig's list for very little money. It seems to be a very well made and ergonomic enlarger and I am looking forward to using it. Unfortunately, it only came with a 35 mm slide carrier and I plan to use it exclusively for medium format (6x6). I have borrowed a Nikkor 75 mm lens from a friend.

Unfortunately, the negative carriers (new) cost more than half of what I paid for the enlarger. Used ones seem to be very rare on ebay and I haven't seen any used 6x6 carriers from the Canadian supplier. My question is: can the 35 mm carrier be easily modified for 6x6 or can another brand be used (such as Omega)? Sadly, when I retired, I lost my access to a nice machine shop, so serious machine work is impractical.

Next, do you recommend the carriers with glass covers? I am not sure that there is a 6x6 with glass, but I believe there is a universal carrier with such a cover. These might easily cost more than I paid for the enlarger, but they might be worth the money.

Thanks very much.

Kodak Xtol - questions & thoughts vs ID11

Sun, 09/05/2010 - 17:31
Hi there,

Yep, this is going to be another of those "what do you think threads?" that will no doubt include the "why not try it for yourself and see" response, however i will still plough ahead.

I currently shot primarily FP4 dev'd in stock ID11 oneshot and have had some success with HP5 and Adox CHS with the same dev. I intend to keep with the same film choices but am considering switching to using Xtol (or at least giving it a fair crack over the winter).

I have read some about this dev and it *seems* to be finer grained, with shadow detail at box speed than D76 or ID11 (don't know how true this is). I am thinking of using Xtol as a reusable stock solution, with replenishment of around 75/100ml per film rather than as a one-shot dev.

I have read that that as a stock solution, it *beds down* after processing a couple of rolls - is this true? What is the change between fresh and *bedded down*? I have seen times of 5 mins for ID11 at 20C - this seems short and worries me slightly, I like longer times as minor variations have less of an effect over a longer time than a short time, thoughts on times with Xtol?

Can Xtol die really quickly with no warning, even a stock solution?

Open ended bit here - any thoughts on using Xtol with FP4, HP5 or Adox CHS? Good bits, bad bits - bring it on..........

Thanks for your time,
Sim2.

Bag for Hasselblad?

Sun, 09/05/2010 - 16:55
Hi,

I'm curious what you Hasselblad users are using for a bag. I'm looking for something light that doesn't scream "steal me I'm a camera bag".

I'm looking for one that can hold a Hassy 500 with an 80mm lens, plus two rangefinder cameras.

Most of the listings I see are advertising how they hold a DSLR and a 70-200 vertically. I'd be leary of carrying a Hassy vertically for some reason. Can anyone share their experiences?

Thanks,

Mark

Tamron 24-135 on a Nikon F5?

Sun, 09/05/2010 - 14:55
OK, I'm considering the purchase of a Nikon F5 body and am wondering if my Tamron 24-135 SP AD model 190D will work as a Nikon D lens. From what I've read it looks like a non D lens wont allow some of the metering functions of the F5 to function and without those functions I'm not sure I want the F5. Any insight is much appreciated.

ZONE Art Center Reunion show

Sun, 09/05/2010 - 14:29
Hey all,

I will be participating in the ZONE Art Center 30th Reunion exhibition. The reception is next Saturday Sept 11th from 4:00 - 7:00 pm at the Canal Gallery, 380 Dwight St, Holyoke, MA. I will have three prints in the show. The exhibit is scheduled to run for two weeks.

ZONE was an artist-run non-profit art space located on Dwight St in Springfield, MA (we recognize the irony of the two street addresses), and was in existence from 1980 - 1995. I was a board member for the life of the organization.

After the exhibit's reception and starting at 8:00 pm is the music portion of the event with many of the local rock/punk bands that played at ZONE's All-Ages shows in the '80s. I don't know if my old ears will be able to take too much of that part of the event! ;)

I know it's a little late announcing this but it's been a long strange summer.
